Requesting a quote for construction or renovation work may seem trivial, but the document legally binds both parties as soon as it is signed. In the construction industry, the decree of January 24, 2017, requires a detailed quote before any repair, maintenance, or intervention, regardless of the amount. Understanding what makes a quote valid, choosing the right channel to obtain it, and anticipating regulatory changes helps avoid delays during the project.
Electronic invoicing and construction quotes: what changes in 2026-2027
Competitors detail the steps for creating a quote or compare online generators. None address the constraint reshaping the administrative landscape of construction: the reform of electronic invoicing.
As of September 1, 2026, all companies must be able to receive electronic invoices. Very small enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises, microenterprises, and craftsmen will have to issue them in the required format starting September 1, 2027. A simple PDF sent by email will no longer suffice for exchanges between professionals: invoices will have to go through an approved platform.
The link to the quote is direct. An accepted quote turns into a deposit invoice, then into a progress or final invoice. If the tool used to draft the quote is not compatible with the electronic invoicing circuit, the craftsman will have to manually re-enter each line into a second software. Obtaining a free quote for construction with L’Essentiel Pro on a platform that already integrates this documentary chain reduces the risk of double entry.

For individuals, this reform has no immediate impact on the request for quotes. However, it encourages craftsmen to structure their documents more rigorously, which also benefits the end client: items are better detailed, and amounts are more readable.
Mandatory mentions in a work quote: beyond the price
A free quote does not mean a simplified quote. The regulatory framework imposes a set of mentions without which the document can be contested.
- Complete identity of the company (name, SIRET, address) and identity of the client
- Detailed description of services, quantities, unit prices excluding tax, applicable VAT rate, and total amount including tax
- Possible travel expenses, validity period of the offer, payment conditions
- Number and contact details of the ten-year insurance when it is mandatory
- Explicit mention of whether the quote itself is free or paid
The absence of just one of these mentions weakens the contractual value of the document. A client who receives a quote without a ten-year insurance number, for example, has no guarantee in case of damage after the work is completed.
A signed quote has the same legal value as a contract. Any subsequent modification (addition of services, change of materials) requires a written amendment accepted by both parties. Field reports show that most disputes at the end of a project arise from additional work carried out without a formal amendment.
Energy renovation quotes: the tightening RGE constraint
Requesting a quote for insulation, heating, or ventilation work adds a layer of verification. Public aids (notably MaPrimeRénov’) condition their payment on the intervention of a company qualified as RGE (Recognized Guarantor of the Environment).
As of January 1, 2027, the company invoicing must itself hold the RGE qualification, even when subcontracting the work. The arrangement where an unqualified client relied on the certification of its subcontractor will no longer be acceptable to obtain aids.
This evolution has a practical consequence on the request for quotes. Before comparing prices, the individual must verify that the company issuing the quote possesses the qualification corresponding to the targeted work. A cheaper quote issued by a non-RGE structure can result in losing access to subsidies, which negates the apparent savings.

Check the qualification before signing
The RGE qualification number and its validity date must appear on the quote. The official directory website for RGE professionals allows for cross-checking the information. An energy renovation quote without a verifiable RGE mention jeopardizes the obtaining of aids.
Comparing multiple construction quotes: concrete pitfalls
Receiving three quotes for the same project does not guarantee a reliable comparison. Price differences often reflect differences in scope, not margin.
First point of caution: the “supplies” line can mask significant quality discrepancies. A quote that states “ceramic tile” without specifying the reference, format, or standard does not allow for comparison with a competitor who details each product. Requiring the technical description of materials makes comparison possible.
Second point: the applicable VAT varies according to the nature of the work and the age of the property. Renovation work in a property completed more than two years ago may benefit from a reduced rate, while new construction falls under the normal rate. Two quotes showing the same amount excluding tax can diverge by several hundred euros including tax if the VAT rate applied differs.
Validity period and price revision
A quote without an explicit validity period remains enforceable indefinitely, exposing the craftsman to a commitment on outdated prices. For the client, an expired quote offers no guarantee of maintaining the rate. The conditions for price revision, when included in the quote, specify whether the amount can change based on material prices or a BT index.
Comparing quotes becomes more relevant when each document follows the same structure of items. Grouping services by lot (structural work, finishing work, etc.) makes it easier to identify actual discrepancies.
The free quote remains a right for individuals in the vast majority of cases. But its free nature does not make it an accessory document: it is the contractual foundation of the project, the starting point of the financial and legal relationship between the project owner and the company. Taking the time to read each line before signing protects better than a clause added afterward.
